Auto Insurance in Massachusetts

Massachusetts Auto Insurance

Here at Cochrane & Porter, we take the mystery out of auto insurance.  In Massachusetts, auto insurance requirements, options and discounts can vary greatly. Because we work with dozens of insurance companies and not just one or a few, we can scour the market to find the right coverage at the best price for you.

Auto insurance is designed to protect your car against theft and damage. It also offers liability coverage in case you cause bodily injury or property damage to others, and medical coverage in the event of injuries. Every state has its own requirements and laws about auto insurance coverage.

Massachusetts Auto Coverage

In Massachusetts, auto insurance policies must contain four specific coverages:

  • Bodily Injury Liability (injury to others)
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP- medical payments)
  • Bodily Injury Caused by an Uninsured Auto (uninsured/underinsured coverage)
  • Property damage liability (damage to someone else’s property)

While not mandatory, you should also purchase coverage for:

  • Optional Bodily Injury (this coverage increases the low mandatory limit set by the state)
  • Collision with another vehicle
  • Comprehensive (coverage for losses due to theft or damage caused by something other than a collision with another car or object)

Other optional coverages

  • Substitute Transportation or Rental Reimbursement
  • Towing and Labor
  • Additional Medical Payments
  • Accident Forgiveness
  • Auto Loan or Lease Gap

In Massachusetts, it pays to be a good driver

Massachusetts auto insurance is experience rated. That means that your insurance rates are based on your driving history. If you have a good driving record, you may be eligible for safe driver discounts. Your driving history will be reflected in The Massachusetts Safe Driver Insurance Plan (SDIP). Drivers who have accidents or traffic violations have surcharge points added to their record. The higher the surcharge points, the higher your insurance premiums.

Are you eligible for credits or discounts?

Insurers offer various credits and discounts that may reduce your auto insurance premium. Not all insurance companies offer the same credits and some require validation. We can help you by identifying any potential opportunities for savings. Some possible credits and discounts include:

  • Safe driver discount
  • Multi-policy discount
  • Multi-Car premium discount
  • Loyalty credit
  • Passive restraint discount
  • “Good Student” premium credit
  • “Driver Away at School” discount
  • Low Mileage discount
  • 65 & older discount
  • Green discount
  • Paid in full discount
  • Advanced driver training discount
  • AARP discount
  • Motor club membership discount

Q. Which insurer offers the lowest auto insurance rates in Massachusetts?

A. There are many insurance carriers licensed in Massachusetts and no one carrier will be the least expensive option for all drivers. Plus, while price is important, there are other factors that also must be considered, such as appropriate levels of coverage, carrier reputation, and service.

Q. How can I be sure I will get the maximum premium credits available on my automobile policy renewal?

A. If you or any drivers on your policy qualify for premium credits requiring validation such as the Good Student, Advanced Driver Training, and Motor Club Credits, send these documents to your Cochrane & Porter customer service agent at least 60 days prior to the renewal date of your policy.

Q. What is an “inexperienced” driver?

A. Inexperienced drivers are drivers that have been licensed for less than 6 years. Inexperienced drivers will typically pay higher automobile premiums due to the negative combined statistical driving records of this segment of the population. Be sure to let your Cochrane & Porter agent know if you have previous driving experience before moving into Massachusetts.
